Talne raion

Тальнівський район

This raion is in southwestern Cherkasy oblast, next to Uman oblast.  It is an ancient region; large numbers of neolithic Trypillian settlements have been excavated here. Many of these were were large metropolises, the largest settlements in the world at the time.

There were four sources for the pysanky from this region: seven pysanky collected by D. Shcherbakivskyi, two illustrations by Oles Petrashevych, the work of four local pysankarky, and pysanky written by Yalyna Ratushniak. The last was a folk artist who exhibited her pysanky in many museums and whose work was written up in ethnographic journals; Taisa Nemyrivska created illustrations of Ratushniak’s pysanky.

Mytsyk and Fysun included 93 pysanky from the Talne region in their book, from the villages of Kolodyste (Колодисте) (
), Vyshnopil (Вишнопіль) (
), Romanivky (Романівки) (
) and Kobrynove (Кобринове) (
).

The pysankary who wrote the originals of the pysanky on this page were:

  1. Unknown (collected by D. Shcherbakivskyi) from Kolodyste. № 19-25 (Table III).

  2. Unknown (collected by Oles Petrashevych) from Vyshnopil; pysanky were collected in 1922.  № 1-2.

  3. Feodosia Mytsyk (1884-1970) from Vyshnopil; her pysanky were written in 1966.  № 3-10.

  4. Varvara Rybchynska (1892-1980) from Vyshnopil; her pysanky were written in 1966.  № 11-16.

  5. Teklia Duchenko (1894-1978) from Vyshnopil; her pysanky were written in 1967. № 17-28.

  6. Yavdokha Badiora (1891-1979) from Romanivky; her pysanky were written in 1968.  № 29-44.

  7. Yalyna Ratushniak (b.1929) from Kobrynove; her pysanky were written in 1967-72. № 1-42 (Tables XX-XXII).

Note: Pysanky from the village of Kobrynove, written by Yalyna Ratushniak, have no set names given for 21-42.  As the author notes, the pysankarka did not know their names, but only referred to them as “riabomyzi” (multicolored), “kosychasti” (curly/askew), “sonechka” (suns) or “zavytushky” (curled lines, spirals).

When writing these pysanky,  had some issues with the dye taking, particularly the orange, brown, blue and purple dyes, so some pysanky were not reproduced exactly.  I will note the original colors where they differ from those shown.

Errors:

III 20: the central floral motifs should have been colored in red. This was missed.

XI 3: body and dots of motif should be red.  This was missed.

XI 4: outer star should be medium green.  Flower petals should alternated red and medium blue.

XI 5: there should be four stars along the equator.  Alternate stars should have orange infill.

XI 6: leaves in upper half of pysanka should be red and blue.

XI 8: infill on side with black flower should be red along outer edge, not black.

XXI 9:  the designs on the front and back were not fully visible (side view given).  I have guessed at them.

XXII 17: the designs on the front and back were not fully visible (side view given).  I have guessed at them.
