Pysanka Exhibit

Boiko/Бойківщина

From the guide: This is the first free-standing case in the second room, and it contains pysanky from the Carpathian Mountains. On this page are those of Boiko people.

The Boiko pysanky are quite distinct:  they are simple designs, usually white with a bright background; sometimes there is a second color, as in the example at the top of this page.  The designs can be written or applied with a pinhead (drop-pull). They are in the far side of the case, facing the back wall.

The Boikos are one of the three Ukrainian highland ethnographic groups (the other being the Lemkos and the Hutsuls).

The pysanky in this case were written by Arnie Klein.
