Western Podillia

In the 1990s, as pysankarstvo was just beginning to regain a bit of its former popularity, someone printed up and sold this set of plates, which excerpted pysanky from Binayshevsky’s book.  The book itself had long been out of print, and had had a very small press run, most of which was shipped and sold abroad. The Soviets did not intend it for local consumption, but for foreign propaganda.

The information included was simply the ethnographic region the designs hailed from. The plates were printed on cheap Soviet-era paper which quickly yellowed.  They were useful, though, and I bought many of them for my pysanka classes in Ukraine.

The pysanky below are examples from western Podillia; while Binyashevsky included 14 pysanky from this region in his book, only 6 were included in the folio.
