The map above shows the town and villages from which we have documented examples of pysanky; this doesn’t mean that pysanky were not written anywhere else, simply that these are the places pysanky were collected/recorded.

The majority are in the northern half of Sumy. oblast, in the eastern Polissia region. Most of the rest fall into the Slobozhanshchyna ethnographic area. Some of western Romny raion falls more into the central Podniprovia area.

Oblast borders rarely. correspond exactly to ethnographic regions; often a single oblast may include parts of several ethnographic zones.  I’ve placed Sumy under eastern Polissia because a majority of the known pysanky from here fall into that category, but be aware that not all of them do
