Kosmach

Космач

Kosmach is a large and prosperous village nestled in the mountains of  Kosiv raion, and has 6054 inhabitants at last count.  It is the largest village by area in Ukraine, and is a center of Hutsul folk arts, particularly embroidery, weaving and pysankarstvo. There is even a folk arts college in Kosiv.

Kosmach has long been renowned for its pysanky; village women/pysankarky have been writing pysanky since time immemorial, and selling them since at least the 1800s, not just within the region, but in cities within the Austro-Hungarian empire, and later USSR and Ukraine.

Kosmach pysanky are among the most intricate in Ukraine, largely because of the commercial aspect of their production; pysankarky learned early on that more intricate pysanky sold better than simple ones, and could fetch a higher price.

The color palette has changed over time, with the introduction of bright modern chemical dyes; where the colors were once white/yellow/green/orange/brown, they are now white/yellow/green/red/black.  You can see this in the galleries, when comparing old pysanky to more recent ones. The love of orange persists in Kosmach embroidery, however (above).

The patterns have changed over the years, too; while back in the mid 20th century there was still a huge variety of designs being produced, in more recent times an emphasis has been placed on speed over quality, and barylky with lots of yellow and red resheto have come to predominate.  Motifs have changed, too, often made to order, and sometime including non-traditional one like Easter bunnies.
