Museum Links

Quite a few museums, particularly in Canada and Ukraine, have extensive pysanka collections. A few have begun putting photos of their collections onto the web.

The site of the Ukrainian National Museum of Traditional Decorative Arts in Kyiv has a nice essay about pysankarstvo and photos of traditional pysanky here. The Pysanka Museum in Kolomyia has wonderful collections (more than 6000 pysanky), but the website is still pretty unimpressive, showing 71 eggs from their collections  You can read a bit more about the museum here.

These are some photos posted to Flickr from an unnamed Polish museum, and depicting a collection of Lemko pysanky.  The color is not very good, and there is a lot of flash artifact, but the eggs are interesting to look at.

The following are a few other nice websites of real and virtual museums:

The Alberta site is particularly impressive, with its virtual museum of rotatable 3-D eggs (although the rotation feature is not working for me at the moment).

I am working on a section of my site devoted to pysanka museums, and have loaded, so far, the ones I’ve visited.  You can view the area here––keep in mind that it is a work in progress.  If you have any information (and/or photos) of pysanka museums or museums with pysanky, please contact me.
