Сергій Кульжинський

Serhiy Kulzhynsky

In 1899, Serhiy Kulzhynskyi published a catalog of the pysanky (and other decorated eggs) in the collection of the Kateryna Skarzhynska museum in the village of Lubny. These pysanky were later moved to the regional museum in Poltava.

In his catalog, Kulzhynsky included the 2123 eggs in the museum’s collection, including 359 pysanky from Poltava hubernia (modern day Poltava oblast and parts of Sumy oblast), of which 91 were shown in color, and the rest as black and white line drawings.

The black and white plates of the remaining Poltavan pysanky can be found below.

The Kulzhynsky catalog included a section with provenance (including village and region of origin), the name of the pysanka (if one existed) and, for the line drawings, a description of the pysanka noting what colors were used and where.  Because the volume was published in 1899, it was published in Russian, due to the Ems Ukase.
