Rocznik Wolynski 1930

Volyn Annual 1930

The pysanky pictured on this page, numbers 54 to 64, are grouped by predominant motifs, rather than place of origin.  The motifs found on them are mostly zoomorphic (animal) motifs.

I have given the place of origin, in Ukrainian and English, for all the pysanky.  I have also included the names of the pysanky, when given, in italics, translated to the best of my ability.

The pysanky in the first plate, numbers 54-58, all appear to be representations of chickens’ feet.  In pysankarstvo, the entire animal was often represented by one of it’s most recognizable parts.  In the case of chicken, it was the foot, with its unwebbed toes.  The first three pysanky show an outlined foot; pysanka 57 uses drop-pull to write the design, while pysanka 58 is a more linear example.  The last two are called «лапки» (lapky), which is the Ukrainian name for any animal’s foot, usually translated as “paws.”

The first four pysanky in the second plate (numbers 59 to 62) are labeled ”spiders.”  As I have discussed elsewhere, spiders can have a variety of depictions, although they generally have a centrifugal or complex net-like composition, resembling the outline of a spider and its web or a swastika.

The final two pysanky, numbers 61 and 62, are labeled as “rams horns.” Such horns are a common motif on pysanky, and is usually two mirror image curls, pointing outwards.  Pysanka 62 is typical in this respect; pysanka 61 more closely resembles a svarha.
