Rocznik Wolynski 1930

Volyn Annual 1930

The pysanky pictured on this page, numbers 65 to 82, are grouped by predominant motifs, rather than place of origin.  The motifs found on them are mostly scevomorphic motifs, those having to do with household/farming items.

I have given the place of origin, in Ukrainian and English, for all the pysanky.  I have also included the names of the pysanky, when given, in italics, translated to the best of my ability.

A common scevomorphic motif is the windmill, which is often a variation of a svarha (swastika), a sun symbol.  Windmills can be seen on pysanky 65, 70, 72, and 79.  Pysanka 67 is labeled as being a windmill motif, but is actually a ruzha.  Pysanka 76 is also labelled as “Windmills,” but appears to be a cluster of cloud/rake motifs.

Another common scevomorphic motif is the rake; as discussed before, it is usually a crossbar or triangle (cloud motif) with fringe (raindrops).  Rakes can be seen on pysanky 67, 68, 69, and, as noted, 76.

Ladders are also a household item depicted on pysanky; they can be found on pysanky 73, 74 and 75, although only the latter is labeled as such.

Two other pysanky appear to have scevomorhic features: pysanka 71 is named “crossbar,” while unnamed pysanka 72 looks like it might be some variation of a windmill or ladders.....

The odd pysanky out are numbers 77 (pussy willow branch), 78 (unnamed, but a ruzha with stripe infill), and 74, which is called “Hrebinnytsia,” the name of a spiky grass.

Pysanky 80, 81 and 82 are classic examples of bezkonechnyky, endless lines/meanders.
