Wheat

Wheat stalks are a fairly common element in diasporan pysanky, although they are not usually the main motif.  They are not seen on traditional folk pysanky.

It is said that the Ukrainian flag, a field of light blue over a field of golden yellow, symbolizes the wheat fields of Ukraine under blue skies. It is perhaps a homesickness that drives Ukrainians abroad to include this common but life-giving grain in their folk art.  My mother, for one, loves pysanky with wheat motifs, so I’ve made a few in my time.
